For those of us who are sometimes challenged by composition, the internet has provided us many tools to assist us when we do not have a friendly proofreader in close proximity.
Grammarly – A plug-in service that checks grammar. Part of the reason that I appreciate WordPress is that it automatically uses Grammarly.
The Hemingway App – A tool that assesses use of adverbs, passive voice, and overall readability to help make your message bold and clear.
PaperRater – provides free online proofreading for a variety of different styles of writing and document formats.
Word and Phrase – this tool compares text to the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) which can help with word choice and structure.
The above resources will check your writing in a pinch, but nothing compares with actually developing the strong written communication skills that employers are seeking. Here are some great resources to help you develop your written communication skills.
Grammar Girl – Mignon Fogarty’s blog of helpful tips on grammar, punctuation, and usage of the English language.
Online Writing Lab (OWL) – Purdue University has developed a great online resource that covers different formats, grammatical rules, and research/citation formats.
